A woman from the Leonardo section of Middletown is facing charges in the hit-and-run death of a teenage girl.
Toni Ann Marletta, 49, is being held at the Monmouth County jail on $150,000 bail after she allegedly struck 15-year-old Marissa Procopio while the teen was walking home from work and fled the scene. Procopio died a few days later.
Witnesses of the incident tell News 12 New Jersey that Procopio had the light as she walked across Route 36 near Avenue D just before 8:30 p.m. on July 7. When the teen stepped off the curb, she was struck by the car.
Middletown police say Marletta was driving the vehicle. Witnesses say Marletta's daughter and one other person were also in the car at the time, but that has not been confirmed by police.
A witness who saw the accident tells News 12 New Jersey that when Marletta allegedly fled the scene, she was force to stop by Lisa Natal, owner of a nearby restaurant, who ran out into the street to confront Marletta. Marletta was allegedly able to get away again.
Police tracked down the car that hit Procopio on the night of the incident. Marletta was questioned but then released. She now faces several charges including leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report a crash, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with an unsafe tire.
Marletta is expected to appear before a judge Thursday. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
