Crews have made progress on the wildfire at Wharton State Forecast that burned more than 13,000 acres of land.
Officials say that the fire is now 95% contained. However, the fire produced a lot of smoke, which makes the air quality in the area unhealthy.
People who live in the area have reported the smell of smoke and seeing hazy skies. That air should improve as rain showers move into the state Tuesday night.
The state Department of Environmental Protection believes the fire started from an illegal campfire Sunday morning. No structures were lost, and no injuries were reported.
The smoke is expected to last a few days.
"Obviously with forest fires, things of that nature, there are susceptible populations – children, the elderly, anybody who could have respiratory issues... There are precautions you can take as well, closing windows, that can help to keep some of that outside,” says Ocean County Public Health Coordinator Dan Regenye.
All roads have been reopened, but Batsto Village, Atsion Recreation Area and hiking trails remain closed.
