A Westwood Regional School District Board of Education meeting erupted into a shouting match Thursday night amid a controversy over an LGBTQ+ Pride sign that was removed from the middle school.
The heated meeting took place after the interim superintendent of the Westwood Regional School District abruptly resigned. Kenneth Rota stepped down Monday, saying it was for personal reasons.
Police were called to the meeting and public comments were cut short.
As News 12 New Jersey previously reported, Westwood High School students pushed a petition back in May to have Pride signs on school grounds. Those signs were removed because they violated a flag policy. Some teachers in Westwood were in support of the signs being reinstated.
Those in support of the ban say school officials should be focusing more on test scores.
The previous superintendent who was on medical leave has returned to the job.
