A hardware store in Essex County is celebrating its 100th year in business.
Schneider Hardware first opened its doors on West Orange’s Main Street in 1923.
“The minute you walk in, you see the old wood flood, the old-time roof, barrels of nails and the old cash register,” says sales manager Roger Schneider.
Main Street may look a bit different now than it looked in 1923, but Schneider Hardware still stands.
“It’s a tribute to any kind of business to survive that long,” says Schneider.
The store has been passed down through three generations and can be described as a museum of sorts. There are unique items inside, including pieces for much older homes in the area.
“There are 80-100-plus homes with unique plumbing and lock hardware issues,” Schneider says.
Schneider says that the business has had its share of hardships over the last century. It managed to outlast the Great Depression, big box stores, COVID-19 and this last mild winter.
Schneider says that while his business is looking toward the future, it won’t stop relishing in the past.
“It takes people back to the way things used to be - it’s a lot of nostalgia,” he says.
