West Nile virus has been detected for the first time this year in Monmouth County.
A batch of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus in the West Belmar section of Wall Township. This is the same area where the virus was detected last year.
Officials with the Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division will conduct ground spraying in Wall and in parts of Spring Lake Heights on Tuesday night as a precaution.
Monmouth County Freeholder Serena Dimaso says that the county wants to be proactive.
"This area has a tendency to breed West Nile virus, so even though we only found one sample, we normally wouldn't spray right away after one sample, we know it can expand," she says.
Spraying will be done Tuesday between 9 p.m. and midnight.
The areas affected in Wall will be south of Belmar Boulevard between Route 35 and Route 71 and north of Allaire Road between Old Mill Road and Route 71 in Spring Lake Heights.
