MetLife Stadium was home to its third World Cup match on Monday evening. To accommodate the thousands of fans heading to the match, NJ Transit was shut down at New York Penn Station starting at 4 p.m.
For some commuters, losing access to Penn Station meant an even longer ride home.
Traveling from New York to New Jersey after work, Arianna Cloppse said it was going to take her an additional hour at least to get home.
"I think it's dumb, honestly, because people have to work," Cloppse said. "I feel like so many people work in New York, it's just chaotic. I think there should be other options than having to take the PATH, another PATH, another train. I feel like there should be more options."
While other commuters were not happy about having to extend their voyage home, one man said he understood the reasoning.
"I mean, [it] definitely was a hassle for us today, but it is for a greater cause, I guess," commuter Sean Gillespie said. "The World Cup is pretty fun, once in a lifetime in the U.S.-kind of experience, so sometimes you just have to let things slide for the greater good."
NJ Transit says Penn Station reopened an hour earlier than expected, according to a post on X.
The next match at MetLife Stadium is Thursday, June 25, 2026. Ecuador and Germany will face off at 4 p.m.
