A new concern is emerging in Ridgefield Park following a recent retaining wall collapse.
A large chain-link fence has now been installed along Overlook Avenue, raising questions from residents about access and safety. Some say they are worried first responders may have trouble reaching homes in an emergency due to the barrier.
The situation stems from a partial retaining wall collapse on June 2, when the structure fell into the parking lot of the Scott Court Apartments.
Since then, that parking area has been shut down and Overlook Avenue has been closed to vehicle traffic out of concern that more of the wall could give way.
Engineers later determined the entire retaining wall needs to be replaced—a project that could take at least a year.
Residents have been forced to park on nearby streets in the meantime. Now, the addition of the fence is creating new frustration, as some question why it was needed and how it could impact emergency access.
Officials have not yet provided an update on the cause of the collapse or specifics about the fence installation.
