The Lyndhurst Township School District is using the World Wide Web as a contingency plan should the dreaded swine flu force any closure.
The district is wrapping up its last few weeks of the school year, but wanted to be ready if swine flu started blowing round its halls and classes. Teachers started working on the online lesson plans two years ago in response to the threat of avian bird flu.
The plans cover up to 12 weeks of work for every grade and subject.
"It's everything from special [education] right to AP courses ? so everyone can continue on," says Assistant Superintendent Tracy Stellato.
The district did polling to see how many students had Internet access at home. The plan was moved forward after learning 99 percent could do their work online. Any students unable to access the Web will be provided with hard copies of all the schoolwork.
There are currently 56 confirmed cases of swine flu in New Jersey. There have been none in Lyndhurst schools, but the district is cleaning each school twice a day to eliminate germs as a precaution.
