As millions head to the Jersey Shore and community pools this summer, the need for certified lifeguards couldn’t be greater.
Coach Andrew Critelli is hoping his training sessions can make a dent in the ongoing shortage.
“It’s a combination of a lot more pools and beach clubs opening, and the lifeguards are not there in the amount that we need,” Critelli said. “I’m trying to spread the word as much as I can.”
About a dozen teens are training at the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County as prospective lifeguards, which takes nearly 24 hours of training.
Sunday was day one of training, which involves a 300-yard swim, timed events and learning various saves.
There are also classroom and first aid components.
“Some of those things are not just for lifeguards, but they are for anyone in the world that needs to know how to save a life,” Critelli said.
Those in the business say the lifeguard shortage is ongoing, but they’re encouraged by the interest in Monmouth County. Now is the time to dive in, they added.
“Pools are hiring,” said lifeguard Julio Aparicio. “Get it done - there’s no better job.”
“Come be a lifeguard because we need you,” said prospective lifeguard Roberto Fontana.
“Aquatics is a big part of my life,” Critelli said. “I wanted to pay it forward to the next generation.”
Those interested can register for one of Critelli’s lifeguard classes here or find one near you through the American Red Cross.
