Welcome back to As Governor Murphy here on News 12 New Jersey Governor, let's continue on. We said we're gonna talk about I-80, uh, the milestone reached this week. Well, Linda does have a question. She posted on Facebook, uh, that she said, I'd like to know what's going on with the road, uh, with these roads and sinkholes. The roads in the state are horrendous, so I, that brings us to the opening of these eastbound lanes on IA. I, I don't know, Linda, that I agree with the roads, quote unquote in the state are horrendous. I'm gonna ask our commissioner of the Department of Transportation Fran O'Connor. To give Linda a call. I hope she's listening. Yeah, so we got two eastbound lanes open last night. This is from this morning. uh, Thunderball 12 was going over the, uh, reopened stretch, uh, thankfully safely. Uh, we will get 2 westbound lanes open. Uh, before the end of the month, which is before next Friday June 25th is what they were saying, uh, that's later on, that's full, that's full completion, full, full, uh, full capacity by the end of June, um, and I, our guys have done, our guys, our guys and gals, the professionals, including pulling in experts from around the country, have done a really, really good job. I mean, this is, this is crazy. This, it turns out this highway. I think it started in 1953 was built on abandoned mine shafts and they have started. The good news is we have more people living in New Jersey than ever before, more people employed, more businesses in operation. I wanna talk to you about strain Governor, big strain on infrastructure, on NJ Transit, on roads, and this road, this highway gave out, uh, but our folks have done an extraordinary job. Commissioner O'Connor deserves a lot of credit, as does his team. Two eastbound last night, 2 westbound by the end of next week. The whole thing open, um, God willing, good is new, as they say by the end of June, and the EDA expanded the grant program, uh, because as you know, small businesses getting crushed, really getting crushed there. uh, it, it expanded the grant program expanded to a maximum of 5 miles from Exit 34 over in Wharton. So, so this is to, this is now outside of Morris County, correct? And they also NJ Trenit also put a. Big discount program in place for folks who were commuting from that part of the state. I visited, listen, I went to one of the diners on one of my visits up to I-80 and classic New Jersey diner, family owned, iconic. They've been there forever. Immigrants, uh, love New Jersey, love America, but they were getting crushed, just absolutely crushed in this the EDA Tim Sullivan and his team did a really good job getting some money out. Not just a program up but money on the street really fast, uh, hats off to them and these businesses needed it desperately, but I'm knock on wood here, I guess the paper, uh, we're getting there, we're almost there. Uh, you joked a few moments ago that this is, uh, the transit show. We've got one more transit related topic or traffic related topic to get to, and that's congestion pricing because this week there was yet another deadline. That was, I don't know if I could even say imposed, but it was ignored by, by New York to stop congestion pricing, uh, or face uh having federal dollars be cut off by the federal government, so, uh. When you see these deadlines come and go and and you see the ultimatums that are ignored, do you, do you grow less and less optimistic that this will go in New Jersey's favor eventually? Listen, we still think we've got a really good case before our federal judge. The Trump administration has gotten to a similar place as we've gotten to, but through a different lane through a different rationale. Um, we still think we've got a really good case and our case is frankly very simple. We felt that the Biden administration and now the Trump administration we're asking. That they should do a full environmental impact statement which takes longer but would take into account the New Jersey interests including pollution that is displaced from Manhattan. Uh, it, it isn't that we wouldn't do a deal we're not doing this deal. This screws our commuters and moves the pollution to North Jersey and we just don't, so we've said, listen. We, we, because we feel so strongly about what this study would, would show, do a full environmental impact statement and we'll live with the results. That's all we've asked for. So we still have optimism or confidence that we've got a good case. Uh, time will tell and as you rightfully point out, Eric, there's a back and forth tussle between the federal government and the state of New York and the MTA. Um, we're not in the middle of that. Uh, we may have some sympathy in terms of the ultimate objective, uh, but, but our lane continues to be the, the federal, um, judge and, and lane that we've been on since the beginning. Governor, we've got a number of, uh, fairly controversial topics to talk about still in today's show, but first I want to talk about, um. Some pretty big news for uh New Jersey's economy, for the Monmouth County economy, and that was the groundbreaking over at the old Fort Fort Mamouth site for for the Netflix studios. Can you just talk about how exciting of a day that was and what this means to the surrounding communities there and when these studios finally opened in the city, it's so poetic, Eric, that it's at Fort Monmouth, which was sort of the ripped out heart. If you will, of Monmouth County, particularly that part of the state where we live, in fact, 1100 acres. Declan O'Scanlon talked about hearing taps every night and hearing it for the last time on September 14, 2011. So it's not just Netflix, 300 acres, a billion dollars, 12 sound stages, post production, all the whiz bang cool stuff. It's the fact that it's there. Uh, huge day. Ted Sarandos, who's become a very good friend, by the way, born in Monmouth Medical, uh, as is, as is the Netflix CFO, you can't make that up. Uh, Ted is the CEO of Netflix. They're the hottest studio on the planet. Uh, he was their great bipartisan group of elected officials, game changer at so many levels, big union industry, it'll be union built and operated. It'll spin off all sorts of economic impact, particularly for those communities right in and around the fort. uh, it's a game changer. It's not the only big move in film and television, but it is the biggest move New Jersey has ever made, and this was a huge, huge emotional day. Our governor, we're taking another quick break. Welcome back to Ask Governor Murphy here on News, New Jersey. I'm Eric Lanzer along with Governor Phil Murphy. Governor, primary day is just about, uh, 2.5 weeks away now. Uh, on the Republican side, of course, President Trump just endorsed, uh, former candidate and gubernatorial candidate currently, uh, Jack Chettarelli, and, uh, Democrats, as you know, have. 6 main contenders right now and this is a, a race that's actually grown quite a bit more contentious in the past couple of weeks. Uh, News 12 actually spoke exclusively with Ken Martin, the new chair of the Democratic National Committee, his first televised interview in the tri-state since taking the reins, and he's paying close attention to this race. Let's listen in. Not taking New Jersey for granted at all. Uh, we're, we're already making investments there. We will continue to make investments and we've got a great bench of candidates running who, uh, for that job, uh wonderful Democrats, any one of them would do a great job as our standard. Bear and of course once that primary is over, we'll roll up our sleeves and work our tails off to get that person elected, whoever it is, you know, New Jersey is not going to be easy. We all know that, of course, uh, but at the end of the day, I believe we can win and I think we will win. And uh governor, just kind of dovetailing in that we have a phone call regarding this very topic. Cindy from Belleville is on the phone. Cindy, thanks for calling in. Hey, Cindy. Hi, how are you, Governor Murphy? I think you're doing a great job. Thank you so much. Thank you Cindy. I have a couple questions for you. Um, who are you endorsing for governor and do you think you'll ever run for president? Um, on the latter, I have no idea. I'm, I'm trying to run through, I got 8 months to go in Jersey and we have so much going on right now. Um, we're gonna sprint through the tape, uh. You never say never, but no plans on that, on that front. We are not, at least as of this moment, we're not endorsing in the primary. Um, I agree with Ken Martin, by the way, who I was on with literally 2 days ago talking about the Jersey race, which I think will be tight as heck no matter who our nominee is, but we've got, as Ken said, 6 really good candidates, um, and we're gonna let that play out. And, and we will be all in for the Democratic uh nominee. um, and I think this is gonna be a really spirited, important election. Remember New Jersey and Virginia are the only two statewide races in the year immediately following a presidential election, so it's, it's always a reaction to or a referendum on what just went before, and I would just say as a public service and that's when I'm obviously a Democrat, but I care most importantly no matter who you support that you vote primary day is June 10th. You could vote early in person, June 3rd to the 8th. You can do a mail-in ballot and get that in. um, again, this is a. This is an incredibly important election both in the primary and the general. Welcome back to Ask Governor Murphy here on News 12 New Jersey. I'm Eric Glanzronner, uh, Governor, just reminding people how they can get their questions and their comments to you today. Governor, this week, uh, Congresswoman La Monica McIver was slapped with, uh, federal charges stemming from the scuffle that happened over at the Delaney Hall ICE detention Center. Uh, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, in the days that followed introduced a resolution to have Congresswoman McIver expelled from the House. This is something that you called outrageous. Yeah, first of all, Mace should be ashamed of herself. Give me a break. Give me a break. First of all, putting us, uh, you're into this, you're innocent until proven guilty in America, at least I think that's still true, uh, but number one, she's got #1, but #2, she's got no, no right to be, be weighing in on this. The outrageous part, most most first and most importantly. Is that a congressperson in the speech and debate clause has every right to show up in any federal facility and has the right to show up on a moment's notice and and and inspect it to go inside, uh, and that was the spirit and by the way, Mayor Baraka and they've dropped charges against the mayor. Mayor Baraka showed up in that same spirit, although not a member of Congress. He is the mayor of Newark and has a right to. to inspect and, and enter buildings in the city of Newark. So the whole thing is outrageous. God willing, it'll play out sooner than later, um, but it's, uh, it's a sign of the times, man, there's a, there's a lot of stuff going on right now that is, that in my humble opinion is, is at least really uncomfortable for our. Democracy in our country and and some of it a lot worse than that. Well you just saw the video right there and and I think we can play it again because we've seen this air from multiple angles and multiple speeds over the past week or so of the congresswoman McIver here. You said it's her right to inspect ICE and CBP facilities. Is it also an explicit right? Under law to shove or assault an ICE agent because, because from if you watch this video, that is what it seems as though is happening here. I listen, I think the one thing that I've adhered to since I was first day as governor is on a, on a law enforcement or judicial or legal matter. I'm not gonna get into the who did what to whom here. Uh, I know, I know with, with absolute conviction she has every right to inspect that building. I would argue even though Mayor Baraka is not a congressperson, he had every right to inspect that building, and I hope this gets resolved, uh, sooner than later. La Monica is doing a fantastic job, by the way, uh, in Congress. She's the newest member of our. Uh, house team and she's been hitting the cover off the ball down there. God bless her. I, I did speak to a former federal prosecutor for the District of New Jersey. Besides, I wanted to get his take on this, you know, I, I said, listen, you saw the video, you've read the articles, you saw what the charges are, and, and he agreed. I said he said if this were an average Joe and not Congressman McIver in this situation based on the video, who laid their hands on a law enforcement officer that they would have been handcuffed right there on the spot. So I mean, should. Regardless of whether she should, she can be there or not, should a congressperson know better than to lay their hands on law enforcement? Listen, I, I'm, I'm gonna disappoint you by giving you the same answer. I'm not gonna get in inside of a of a of a legal or an indictment or whatever, uh, this might be, and that's been our policy from day one. I just think. She is a rock star. Uh, she had every right to be there. I'll let the rest of the rest of this play out. All right, Governor, uh, let's get to another call right now. We have Josh from Montclair on the line. Uh, thanks for calling in, Josh. Hey Josh. Hi there, Governor. So, uh, as, as you know, there was a horrific shooting last evening in Washington DC a couple of Jewish people leaving an event from the Jewish museum, gunned down by somebody screaming about free Palestine. And for those of us in the Jewish community, and you've been a terrific supporter of the Jewish community, Governor, there's no doubt in your steadfastness. and support for us, but the question is, you know, for those of us in the Jewish community, we've seen a connection between some very violent and very hateful rhetoric and what's now turning into action. And in the spirit of your comments about government overreach a few minutes ago, you know, I would not suggest that the that the government be coming down on people for expressing their First Amendment constitutional rights to expression. On the other hand, You know what we don't see enough of is real condemnation from our leaders for some of the very specific things that are spoken and things that are said that are clear incitements to violence, things like globalize the intifada, things like river to the sea, the accusations of genocide and apartheid that are falsely put toward Israel but then end up because of the Jewish community. association with Israel end up coming back on us as well. And I guess what I'm asking here again is, you know, not so much that there be legal consequences for these people, but rather how can we expect more of our leaders to finally step out and very specifically condemn what's very clearly incitement to violence and rhetoric that that goes in that direction. Thank you. Yes, I appreciate this, Josh. Um, and I, I wanna figure out a way to follow up with you constructively. Um, Natalie Hamilton is with me. Natalie and I will figure out how we could do that because I could spend the rest of the show. Answering that very fair, uh, assertion by Josh. First of all, God rest the souls of these two innocent folks, uh, Sarah Milgram from the state of Kansas, by the way, an American, and, uh, Yon Lashinsky, who I believe was from Jerusalem, by the way, about to be engaged next week. Uh, which it makes any loss of life, innocent loss of life is tragic, and that makes it even more so gunned down coming out of an AJC event, I believe for young diplomats in Washington, um, and just awful beyond awful. I've been on, I've been back and forth with the Israeli ambassador with their consul general, um, in New York with whom I spoke a short time ago, uh, just awful, awful, awful, and we have put a statement out, Josh, unequivocally condemning this. And there's uh too many wires are getting crossed right now, um. Anybody who commits an act of violence against innocent individuals in whatever name needs to be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. They must be condemned without reservation. Period. Full stop. There's, there's no mercy for someone who did what they did to these two innocent people, no matter what their beliefs are. Um But there are all sorts of uh folks, I think Joshua applies. I don't like Prime Minister Netanyahu and or the his cabinet in Israel and therefore I'm gonna transport that into attacking Jewish people everywhere or young professionals who happen to work for the Israeli embassy in Washington. that those wires cannot get crossed. I, I have every right to question President Trump as I did President Biden before him. Uh, that's our right. We have that ability. That doesn't mean I hate America or I hate Americans. Uh, it doesn't mean if you question an act by the Israeli government that you hate the Israeli people and by the way, on the other side of the coin, starving innocent people can't be the answer to this either. There has to be, we, we have to find some sane. Uh, ground that both respects what Josh said. We can't, we can't allow any of this hatred, uh, to go on and at the same at the same time protect innocence on all sides of this. And this is yet another chapter and by the way, this has been going on a long time. People will point to October 7th, uh, as a day of tragedy, by the way, we had a great result. I hope we could talk about Adan Alexander, um, which was a huge positive uplifting, uh, chapter, but last night was awful, and we, it must be condemned unequivocally and that individual must be. Brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law, period. Full stop without any reservation. Yeah, acts acts like those don't free anyone anywhere, uh, and, and, and, and you and you mentioned set the cause that apparently he cared for backward not forward, right? Uh, I mean, listen, and you mentioned starvation. I mean, Hamas has been starving its own people, um, by, by stealing aid, but, um, you mentioned Edan Alexander from Tenafly. to fly New Jersey band, uh, and, uh, finally released by the terror group Hamas, um, have you spoken with his family and, uh, do you hope to meet with him? No, it's no question we're gonna meet with him. We just have to figure it out. In fact, Tammy and I were with our team yesterday afternoon on this very topic. What a joyous moment we have gotten to know. Look at that. It just takes your breath away. We've gotten to know his family and his mom and dad in particular really well, as I've been saying for all the wrong reasons, right? So this is not the way you wanted to meet somebody. Uh, we've had them at, uh, our Seders over the past couple of years. Adie in particular and I have been back and forth a ton. Uh, Ardie sent, uh, I don't think I'm, I'm betraying any confidences. Addie sent Tammy a screenshot or a photo of their three kids now back together, so it's Adan and his brother and sister sitting on a couch. I assume that they're at, at home, all three of them on their phones and he said we're back to normal, which I thought was a great. A great way to, great way to put it, but we have to condemn what happened last night in In every possible way and as I say, regardless of who's responsible for innocent people starving, that's gotta stop too, uh, period. So this is, please God, we could find, uh, that common peaceful ground sooner than later. Governor, let's take another quick break. Welcome back to Ask Governor Murphy here on News 12 New Jersey. Governor, let's get back to the phones. Uh, we have Ron from Lakewood on the line. Ron, thanks for calling in. What's your question? Hey, Ron. Hi, Governor Murphy. Um, I heard a commercial coming in on the way home on the radio and then I think it was an alternative energy company maybe, and they seemed to say that the the electric hikes that are going to come starting in June, um. hikes. Why, why are they blaming you for the electric, uh, uh, raises? Everybody blames me for everything else, so it's, it's not surprised I'm getting blamed for that. I suspect it was a political, uh, advertisement, sir. Uh, but Ron, I'm gonna ask Dennis Zebeloff, who is our head of policy, to follow up with you. The rate increases are real. These are the average rates depending on your carrier. So I'm not making light of the rate increases, but there's a complicated set of reasons. We are part of a regional consortium of 12 states in the District of Columbia and something called PJM. It's been around since the 1920s and for a lot of reasons, it's smart to be in a consortium as it relates to power because when you need it and somebody else doesn't, there's a way to compensate and vice versa. It's worked well, but and I've called their leadership, they're coming in next week or the week after. They have hundreds if not thousands of projects generating projects that are on their backlog list that have not been greenlit. We have a huge supply demand challenge. It's the reason why I put aside politics, it's it's the reason why. Freezing the offshore wind, uh, program in New Jersey is just counterproductive. Are we allowed to put aside politics on the show? I don't I don't know. Let me check with my people. I'll come back to you, but it's incredibly counterproductive when you've got a supply demand imbalance, you need more supply. The demand is high for good reasons. We're rocking in New Jersey. We're growing, um, across a whole range of industries and more population up and all that. But I will also say this, we cannot sit in our hands, so we're calling the PJM folks in. Uh, we'll, we're gonna, we're trying to find ways to deliver relief here, uh, no matter who's to blame. The fact of the matter is folks are suffering right now and, uh, stay tuned. We're working on a package of things we may have some news to, to break next week, but we cannot sit in our hands given those increases that you saw. There are two things that are growing like a weed right now and neither one of them are good. Those rates on the screen and insurance costs. And by the way, we're not, uh, we're not unique. Uh, go to Florida right now and look at your homeowner's insurance. Uh, it would take your breath away to pick one example, but we're also not, well, not unique, we're not immune. And we, we, we are attacking both of those. Both are increases that are unacceptable. Yeah, it's funny you said, uh, leaving politics aside, there's so much to, I know, but there's so much finger pointing over this. PGM says it's not their fault, but also saying it's a supply and demand issue just like you. Republicans in the state blame you for putting all of your eggs in uh in the offshore wind basket, which, by the way, we haven't, um, recently we said we are. We're one of the largest nuclear operators in the country. I would, I'd like to see that go up. Uh, solar, we have 5 gigawatts of solar, uh, huge investments in, I didn't mean to cut you off, huge investments in energy conservation, uh, offshore wind, when you've got our shore. you'd be crazy not to take advantage of that asset, and I'm still hopeful we'll be able to turn. The Trump team around, uh, but I think it's really shortsighted given the supply demand imbalance. There's been a call again for more generous solar incentives in the state. Is that something that could potentially be looked at? I would look at it. I had a meeting on solar literally on that topic yesterday. Uh, our solar story is a big success story, so 5 gigawatts sounds like a really technical term. That's 5000 megawatts. That's a huge deal, um. And that powers a lot of the state, particularly there's a huge upside, particularly in community solar where you put solar panels on the roof of a warehouse and the neighborhood feeds off of that as opposed to having to put one on your garage or my garage you've got sort of a common uh mini utility if you will, huge upside there. Governor, uh, let's get to another call right now. We have Martha from Hamilton on the line. Martha, hey, Martha. Hi Governor, how are you today, sir? I'm very well. How about yourself? Hamilton, by the way, was huge on the 4 days of the strike. It was one of the 4 park and ride areas along with the PNC Bank Art Center, Secaucus, and Woodbridge and Hamilton was really, really instrumental in making that as less painful. I'll put it that way than it otherwise would have been. Yeah, yeah, I agree. And you know, Governor, I appreciated your leadership during the pandemic. I wish you could go for a third term. Honestly, I'll vote for you again. So my question is, my question to you is you previously talked about medical debt relief, and I was curious, can you go give us a little bit of in depth on that and who's eligible and how can they apply? Lots of people are eligible. I am going to ask again the aforementioned Dennis Zeveoff, Martha to give you a call, our head of policy. That is one of the huge success stories over the past year, year and a half. We had an incredibly important, wonderful colleague, Louisa Carmen killed on New Year's Day, uh, a year and a half ago. She was the champion of retiring medical debt for cents on the dollars. In fact, we named. An act after the late Louisa with her mom and dad and family with us. We have retired now hundreds of millions of dollars of medical debt for a fraction, literally pennies on the dollar. There's a nonprofit that leads this effort. We work the state of New Jersey works with them. We typically work with big hospital systems, uh, and I want to give them a shout out. We did a big one with our WJ Barnabas recently. Uh, but literally it, it's, it's one of the success stories in an otherwise crushing affordability reality for too many inside the medical, uh, uh, uh, sort of discussion, but I'm gonna ask Martha, I'm gonna ask Dennis to follow up with you. There's real opportunity here, uh, and I hope we can work and help you through this as well. We have time for a few more questions after this break here on Ask Governor Murphy. We'll be right back.

All right, welcome back to Ask Governor Murphy here in New Jersey, uh, Governor, so let's talk about the Big Beau Bill Act. Uh, by a razor thin margin, did you see the smile actually started fading as I was saying it, but, uh, by a razor thin margin, uh, it passed now goes to the Senate. Uh, I know that there's a great deal that you don't like about this. One of the things that I think you'd be behind is the restoration of the salt, the, the salt tax. Yeah, I mean, I wanted to see that lifted, period. So they got it up to 40,000 and I'm told the Senate has no sympathy for 40,000 and that's likely to go down as they sort of me this thing, mash it together. It's a shameful. There's so much right now in America that is concerning, and this is shameful and we had 3 members of the House delegation in New Jersey vote for this. It passed 215 to 214. Folks, if you're not paying attention, this literally means billions of dollars. For New Jersey that will go away billions, it will mean hundreds of thousands of individuals who will go without. Not all of it, but a lot of that through Medicaid. Um, we've held some town halls and one of the big things that this bill pushes forth is work requirements. Uh, who is it for somebody if they're able to work and they're able to get a job, who's against that? I, I, I get Republicans also say that that Medicaid is not going to be cut for those who are eligible. They say a lot of they use this phrase uh fraud, abuse, and fraud and abuse is what they say. It is, it is code, folks, for they're coming, they're coming for you. We do these, these round tables, but they say that's a flat out lie. It's not a lie. It's an absolute fact. And when we do these round tables, Tom Kean in particular. In a swing district from a family that stood on the right side of history for decades, generations in fact, just a shameful vote when we do these round tables, in fact, we did one in Tom's district and I invited him to join me. There's nobody at that table who could work and yet they're gonna either get cut from the rolls or their benefits will be reduced. They'll have nowhere else to turn. No state in America can make up for the hole that's been created, including New Jersey. It's a, it's a day, uh, it's a dark day in our country.
