The Morris County medical examiner says a high school football player's death Friday was caused by a ruptured spleen.

Evan Murray, 17, suffered an injury on the field and then died from internal bleeding from a laceration on his spleen, according to the medical examiner.

Murray, a senior at Warren Hills Regional High School, walked off the field under his own power Friday night after taking a hit in the backfield late in the second quarter. A short time later, he collapsed.

Witnesses say Murray felt "woozy" after the tackle but tried reassuring his teammates that he would be fine as he was lifted on a gurney and taken to a hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

During the autopsy, Dr. Ronald Suarez found Murray's spleen was abnormally enlarged and more susceptible to injury. Dr. Suarez also stated that there was no evidence of head trauma or heart disease. He determined the death to be an accident.

Murray was a three-year starting quarterback for the Blue Streaks. He also excelled in basketball and baseball, and he is being remembered as an outstanding athlete and natural leader.

Words of support for the community and for Murray's family are pouring in from around the state and the country. The New York Jets and Gov. Chris Christie are among those who have expressed their support on Twitter.

Murray's wake will be held Wednesday at Safe Discovery Church in Washington Township. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at the church.
