News 12 New Jersey was able to boost its gas mileage over the past two months after installing a Vortex Fuel Saver.

The new invention, developed by New Jersey inventor and company president Lou Elwell, boasts that it can increase fuel mileage by up to 25 percent per gallon. Elwell says the invention utilizes magnets to burn gas more efficiently and reduces emissions.

"We like to under-promise and over-deliver," says Elwell. "We had a lot of people that got a lot more than 20 percent, but we feel very comfortable saying you're going to get at least a 10 percent savings."

News 12 New Jersey tested the gadget on a 2005 Chevy Equinox. After installation and a tune-up, the vehicle's fuel efficiency jumped by 7 percent.

Elwell advised replacing "arcane wiring" in the engine. Following that repair, News 12 New Jersey got the promised results with an overall 12 percent increase.

The Vortex Fuel Saver costs $400 and must be installed by a professional. With gas currently around $3.35 a gallon, depending on how much a driver is on the road, it could take between six months to two years of driving for it to pay for itself.

Elwell's say his invention lasts a lifetime and can go from vehicle to vehicle.
