New Jersey’s utility companies are preparing for a potential weekend nor’easter that could impact electrical service around the state.
Forecasters say that the weekend storm could potentially bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Garden State – which could cause damage.
“The first nor’easter of the season is always tricky because trees are still full of leaves, creating an increased chance of outages from trees and branches downing power lines,” PSE&G electric operations vice president Jack Bridges said in a statement.
PSE&G and Jersey Central Power & Light say that extra crews will be on standby this weekend, ready to respond to downed powerlines, downed trees or hazardous conditions that may impact service.
The companies urge homeowners to prepare their families in the event of a power outage. Residents should make sure their cellphones are fully charged, flashlights have batteries and first aid kits are stocked.
People are also reminded to stay away from any downed power lines. Power lines should always be considered “live.” Contact the utility company if downed lines are discovered.
Homeowners are also reminded not to run a gasoline-powered generator inside a garage or other enclosed space, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Forecasters say that the rain should begin Friday evening and last through Sunday morning.
