The USS Intrepid was moved to dry dock in Bayonne Tuesday for part of its extreme makeover.
The ship arrived in the Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal in December 2006. The dry dock process will take two days while crews pump out water and examine the ship. After that process, a series of improvements will be made to the ship?s exterior.
?We?re going to inspect the bottom of the hull. Do some steel repairs? We?re gonna blast and paint the ship, which takes quite a few gallons to paint,? said Bayonne Dry Dock President Michael Cranston.
Once the exterior repairs are finished, the Intrepid will be brought to Staten Island on June 6 for interior repairs. The interior improvements will include more high-tech and interactive exhibits.
The ship will be brought back to New York City and reopened in the fall of 2008.
