Two dog walkers and one dog suffered injuries when three unleashed dogs exited a vehicle and attacked them Wednesday in the parking lot of a Shoprite supermarket in Hoboken.
Hoboken police said it happened around 1 p.m. Officers responded to the parking lot after getting reports of a dog attack. When they arrived, they learned that three unleashed dogs had exited a vehicle and attacked two dog walkers, each handling four dogs on leashes.
"As a result of the attack, one dog suffered injuries and has since undergone surgery. Additionally, both dog walkers suffered sprained wrists while trying to control the leashed animals," Hoboken police said in a statement.
Following the attack, the owner of the three unleashed dogs managed to get them back into the vehicle before leaving the area.
Police later learned that the aggressive dogs were seized by police in Secaucus as a result of a separate attack, during which two people were seriously injured. Police say the dog owner is a Hoboken resident. Three other dogs owned by the same person, that were not involved in the attack, were surrendered to animal control officers.
The dog owner was issued three summonses by animal control for "having potentially dangerous dogs."
"He was additionally issued a summons for violating an August 2025 consent order from the Hoboken Health Division, which stated the resident's dogs would be muzzled and leashed whenever they are out in public," Hoboken police said.
Each violation carries a fine of up to $1,000. Police are continuing to investigate the case to determine what additional charges, including criminal, will be filed.
