An alumni hockey game was played Saturday in honor of Flight 3407 victim Madeline Loftus, of Parsippany, at Buffalo State College.
Loftus, who was on her way to Buffalo from New Jersey to play in the alumni game, was killed Thursday when Continental Commuter Flight 3407 crashed into a home near Buffalo. According to Buffalo State?s Athletic Director Jerry Boyes, Loftus? teammates insisted they play the game ?in Maddy?s honor.?
Loftus? teammates filed into the ice arena after 11 a.m. and hung Loftus? jersey ? number 10 ? behind the bench before the match. One of the players? mothers, Patti O?Connor, says Loftus? teammates needed to play and grieve together.
?They cried, they played, they won and lost together,? O?Connor says. ?To feel this pain together was important to [my daughter]. She was going to come today no matter what."
At the final buzzer, 10 candles were lit in honor of Loftus, and the crowd and players observed 10 minutes of silence. The players say the alumni game will now be known as the Maddy Game.
At Princeton University, friends and colleagues honored 30-year-old Lorin Maurer at all athletic events Saturday. Maurer worked as a fund-raiser for the university?s athletic department.
"Lorin's personality was very, very pleasant, very outgoing and truly you never heard anyone say a bad word about her,? Jerry Price, an assistant lacrosse coach at Princeton, says. ?She was a very sweet young lady."
