The Count Basie Center for the Arts celebrated its 100th anniversary, and two of New Jersey’s most iconic musicians were honored with the first-ever inductions into the Center’s new Walk of Fame.

This year’s inaugural inductees are William "Count" Basie and Jon Bon Jovi.

The two New Jersey natives were honored with commemorative plaques that were installed in the sidewalk outside of the venue.

An excited crowd erupted in cheers as Basie, a Red Bank native and global jazz pioneer, was posthumously recognized for his profound cultural impact.

The room was filled with local and state elected officials, supporters of the center and musicians, including Sen. Vin Gopal, Red Bank Mayor Billy Portman and Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone.

“The music that Count Basie took around the world was the music of freedom,” said T.S. Monk, fellow musician and son of jazz legend Thelonious Monk.

Monk said he hoped people walking by the new plaque would be reminded that: “Greatness can come from anywhere on this continent. And a kid from this corner of New Jersey grew up to make the whole world dance.”

Following Basie, Jon Bon Jovi was inducted into the Count Basie Walk of Fame as the crowds erupted into cheers and applause after seeing the music icon in person.

“I really do appreciate you inducting me along with the great Count Basie, who is the original Monmouth County rockstar,” he said.

“There are so many names just as deserving today, and I look forward to future generations who will continue the legacy of New Jersey and Red Bank. Thank you so much for this honor.”

For the Count Basie Center, it’s about more than honoring the past, it's also about fueling the future.

“When our students come here, learning instruments and dreaming of being on that stage, it’s moments like these that show them it’s possible,” said Adam Philipson, president & CEO of the Count Basie Center for the Arts.

Basie and Bon Jovi are the first names on what promises to be a growing list. The Walk of Fame is planned as an annual tradition, celebrating the rich artistic legacy of New Jersey for another century and beyond.
