Two empty barges washed up on the shore of Woodmont Beach in Milford on Thursday, according to fire officials.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the barges broke free from their designated mooring around 3:30 p.m. during severe weather and drifted approximately five miles before coming ashore.
The barges, each 140 feet long, originally left Milford Beach around 6:30 a.m. and are now located in West Haven, just outside someone’s break wall.
Due to dangerous weather conditions, officials say it’s currently unsafe to attempt moving them. A salvage and towing team is on site working to remove the barges from the break wall and return them to their original mooring location.
The barges belong to Buchanan Marine, which plans to remoor them and assess whether they are still viable.
No injuries have been reported.
