President Donald Trump tweeted what looks like a movie-style poster that takes creative inspiration from the TV series "Game of Thrones" to announce the reimposition of sanctions against Iran.
Trump tweeted a photo of himself with the words "Sanctions are Coming.” The U.S. sanctions on Iran had been lifted under a 2015 international nuclear pact, but they are being reimposed on Monday.
The sanctions cover Iran's shipping, financial and energy sectors. They're the second batch of penalties reimposed since the president withdrew from the deal in May.
The sanctions that'll come into force Monday penalize countries that don't stop importing Iranian oil and foreign companies that do business with blacklisted Iranian entities.
"These sanctions hit at core areas of Iran's economy. They're necessary to spur changes we seek on the part of the regime,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. “In order to maximize the effect of the president's pressure campaign, we have worked closely with other countries to cut off Iranian oil exports as much as possible."
The image that Trump tweeted featured the date of Nov. 5.
A spokesperson for HBO told News 12 New Jersey in a statement, “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”
