Former President Donald Trump’s supporters gathered at his golf course in Bedminster the day after his attempted assassination.
Unity - a message echoed by Trump and President Joe Biden - was the buzzword among the crowd.
“We need to stand united as Americans,” said Jenna Gallicchio.
“You have to unite,” said Terry Beck, of Hillsborough.
“This country needs unity,” said Christopher Chiusilo, of Fort Hills.
The attempted assassination of a former president and current candidate - days before his expected nomination - left his supporters stunned.
“It was kind of like one of those ‘Where were you?’ moments, because this hasn’t happened in 43 years,” Chiusilo said. “I had a sickening feeling in my stomach.”
“The fact that anybody would try and kill anyone, regardless, is horrible,” Gallicchio said.
“Now it's gone too far,” Beck said.
Trump arrived in Newark overnight after an evening at a Pennsylvania hospital. He spent Sunday at his golf club in Bedminster resting before departing for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Dozens hoped for a glimpse at his motorcade, and a call for civility.
“I don’t care what side of the line you consider yourself on,” Gallicchio said. “Until we decide that we’re all Americans, and we want what’s best for this country, we’re not going to have a country left to stand for.”
“It's better to agree to disagree, and be friends, and unite for the best in the country and the best for the kids coming up,” Beck said. “Because otherwise, we're going to fall apart.”
“We should all be kinder to each other,” Chiusilo said. “We share one planet, we're all human beings. It doesn't matter what sex you are, what nationality, what color you are. Doesn't matter.”
The Republican National Convention is slated for Monday through Thursday.
Trump is expected to accept the Republican presidential nomination and announce his pick for vice president.
