State police are trying to determine how a marked police SUV was damaged in Clinton as officers responded to a crash early Saturday morning.
The patrol SUV was parked on the side of I-78 at around 4:30 a.m. when the incident happened. A blue Honda Civic had crashed at mile marker 19.
While the officers attended to the driver, identified as 29-year-old Phillipsburg resident Antonio Melendez, the rear window of the state police Chevy Tahoe was struck and shattered by an unknown object.
Police say no one was injured.
Officers began an intense search for the person who shattered the car's window. They brought in K-9 units and a helicopter to scour the surrounding area of Lebanon.
East and westbound lanes on I-78 were closed for hours, snarling traffic in the area for several miles. Vehicles were detoured off of I-78, creating residual delays on Route 22. All lanes have since reopened.
Melendez was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries he suffered during the crash. Officials say his car was totaled.
Police have not yet determined what caused Melendez to crash. No charges have been filed.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
