Heavy rains could once again soak parts of northern New Jersey Wednesday night.
Many towns in the area are still dealing with property damage caused by flooding from Ida’s remnants.
Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights looked like a river last week because of the flooding, and dozens of homeowners were impacted.
People are still sifting through their belongings that were damaged. The curbs are lined with trash ready for pickup. The residents don’t live along a river or stream. The flooding appeared to be due to a poorly working drainage system.
Resident Angelo Romano says that the flooding caused sinkholes to appear in his yard.
“It was scary. I’m worried about the whole property falling in. My biggest concern is that it’s starting to ruin the house,” Romano says. “It needs a major infrastructure change – the whole town.”
Romano says that that town told him that property owners are responsible for fixing the damage. But he and other homeowners disagree and says that this is what FEMA aid should be used to repair.
