A giant tree fell in East Orange Tuesday afternoon, shutting down a residential street and flattening a resident?s minivan.
No one was injured when the oak fell without warning on Carnegie Avenue. The toppled tree destroyed Willis Coco?s minivan, which he purchased just three months ago. Coco says despite his destroyed car, things could have been worse.
?If you stand on the porch, you can touch the branches,? Coco says of the tree. ?It was that close. [I?m] glad nobody was outside.?
Cleanup crews estimate the oak was at least 150 years old and suffering some rot, which caused weakness near the base.
The tree removal crew will be back Wednesday to finish cutting up and getting rid of the tree.
