Hoboken is demoting 10 top ranking firefighters in an effort to help head off the city's budget deficit.
Four battalion chiefs and six captains were told last week they would be demoted to their previous rank starting in May. Two civilians were also laid off from the department.
Fire officials say the cuts could force the closure of firehouses in Hoboken. The acting fire chief says if the demotions go through, he won't have enough commanders to continue operating at least one house.
