Monday will mark the first day of toll hikes on both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.
The Turnpike will increase from $1.25 to $1.70, while the Garden State Parkway will go up from $0.70 to $1.00. Officials say the extra tolls will increase the state?s revenue. Many motorists say they feel the toll hikes are unfair during a time of economic crisis and will try to find ways to commute that avoid taking the two roads.
One Sayreville family was honored in 1954 after being the first to pay the 25 cent toll on the bridge that crosses the Raritan River. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 25 cent toll in 1954 adjusted for inflation would be worth over $2 today.
