A gas hike alternative to Gov. Jon Corzine's toll plan is meeting with similar resistance.
Efforts to ease the governor's proposal to increase highway tolls by boosting gas prices have some drivers worried. The proposal could lead to a gas tax increase by as much as 20 cents per gallon.
New Jersey currently has the third lowest gas tax in America, a luxury that visiting drivers passing through the area say they would miss.
Supporters of the idea say it's a fair way to fund road and mass transit improvements. Corzine says it is necessary to find a way to cut New Jersey's multimillion dollar debt.
