A new technology is being tested in Belleville to deter illegal parking and improve pedestrian safety.

The township has installed solar-powered poles called SafetySticks at intersections where parking violations are common.

The devices are placed near fire hydrants and yellow curbs and monitored 24/7.

Drivers have a 90-second grace period before cameras capture license plates and send images to Belleville police for review.

Officials say 108 tickets have been issued since the system was installed last month.

Some residents support the effort, while others say the grace period is too short.

Mayor Michael Melham says the goal is safety, not revenue, and the sticks may be moved to new areas once violations drop.
