New Jersey drivers may soon be able to purchase license plates featuring a throwback design from the 1980s.
State Sen. Kristin Corrado sponsored the legislation, which the state Senate Transportation Committee advanced on Monday.
"The idea to revive New Jersey's blue license plate was recommended to me by a constituent. It turns out that many New Jerseyans, especially classic car enthusiasts, favor the vintage license plate design,” Corrado said in a statement.
The legislation would authorize the state Motor Vehicle Commission to issue plates that replicate the blue license plates issued between 1979 and 1991.
“In addition to fees typically associated for the registration of a motor vehicle, there is an application fee of $50 and an annual renewal fee of $10 for the classic license plates,” Corrado said.
Corrado added that New Jersey would not be the first state to bring back older license plate styles and said that other states have seen a “great demand for them.”
