Thousands of people were out on New Jersey’s roadways on Monday for the last day of the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Some who stopped at the Cheesequake rest area were on their way home from their holiday festivities, while others were taking in as much fun as possible with a last day at the Jersey Shore.
“I honestly couldn’t wait to just take the kids out to go to the beach and have a good time,” says Sam Sankar, of Wayne.
Sankar says that this was the first real holiday road trip the family has taken since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
But getting away this year has cost a little more than in years past because of fuel prices. Gas prices this year are reportedly the highest they have been for a Fourth of July holiday in seven years.
Traveling at areas airports for the holiday also seemed back to normal since the pandemic. As more people are vaccinated, there seems to be less fear of getting on a plane.
The Transportation Security Administration says that on July 3, 1.9 million people nationwide made their way through airport checkpoints. About 1.6 million traveled through airports on July 4.
However, AAA reports that 91% of travelers were on the roads for the holiday.
