Music legend Herb Alpert will be hitting the stage in New Jersey. The famed trumpet artist is set to perform at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank.

It is part of an extensive national tour that the 87-year-old Alpert is embarking on. 

"This is what I live for," says the Grammy Award winner. "It gives me energy. It doesn't take energy from me to do these concerts, it gives me energy."

Alpert will be joined by his band and longtime musical collaborator and wife, singer Lani Hall. 

Alpert rose to fame in the 1960s with his group Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass. His first instrumental hit, "The Lonely Bull," was released in 1962.

He co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss in 1962, which over the years signed artists including The Carpenters, Joe Cocker, Sting, Bryan Adams and many others. Alpert and Moss sold A&M in 1989.

Alpert has continued to release new albums and tour. He say he is not bound by a specific genre and has cultivated his own sound.

"I don't there's a genre for me. I think I just try to make good music. I grew up listening to Louis Armstrong, Harry James and some great trumpet players and I found myself trying to copy their feeling, their style and I got the a-ha one afternoon and said, 'Hey, man, who wants to hear that? They've already done it.'"
