A truck crashed into the New Jersey Transit overpass on Laurel Avenue in Holmdel Sunday – the third time this has happened since March.

Officials say that they are trying to determine why trucks that are too tall are crashing into the overpass, despite signs that warn drivers about the clearance.

The overpass is marked for 12 feet 5 inches. Similar incidents occurred on May 21 and March 19. Luckily no one has been injured.

“We’re looking at both raising the bridge as well as dropping the road,” says Monmouth County engineer Joseph Ettore. “But both have technical issues.”

Ettore says that a $700,000 study, paid for by federal funds, will soon begin to determine what exactly is causing this to happen. But Ettore says that he has his own ideas.

“We’re finding that people rely on GPS much more frequently than they did in the past and as a result, they are blindly following the recommended routes,” he says.

NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith says that truck drivers must remain aware of the height of their vehicles at all times and obey the law regarding restrictions on over-height trucks at bridges.
