Drivers looking simply to warm up their car before getting behind the wheel this winter have been getting a cold dose of reality in Nutley.
Nutley police are looking to crack down on what they say is an unusually high number of car thefts. More than a dozen drivers have fallen victim to the thefts this winter after leaving their cars idling. Investigators are calling it a crime of opportunity.
"People have been leaving keys in the car, engine running, taking care of personal business in this 2-3 minute period and cars are being stolen," says Detective Lt. Steve Rogers.
Authorities believe the same perpetrators are behind at least 13 car thefts in the area since September. Most of the thefts have taken place close to Route 21, providing an easy escape route out of town after the thefts.
Motorists are being advised to take their keys with them, or carry two sets in order to keep the car running and lock the doors. Police say the thefts have started to taper off with increased public knowledge of the threat, but drivers are warned the thieves are still on the streets.
Nutley police ask that anyone with information contact them at 973-284-4940.
