A group of young musicians are able to continue performing thanks to a generous donation made toe their school.

The students at the Academy of Fine and Performing Arts School in Paterson were devastated to learn that many of the school’s instruments were ruined over the summer due to water damage.

"When I came back in September I found that there was moisture all over the room. Some of the instruments were actually sitting in water,” says school band director Nancy Horowitz.

The students still practiced with the instruments, despite the damage. But they admit that it was difficult.

"The difficulties were being in tune because the slides wouldn't move to be in tune, so we just had to try to force it,” says sixth-grader Doris Chaclan.

Horowitz says that she posted some photos of the damaged instruments on social media. She says that a friend reached out with connections to VH1’s “Save the Music” and the “Sound Start Foundation.”

A few months later, 13 boxes of instruments arrived – just in time for the school’s Christmas concert.

The students were eager to show News 12 New Jersey the new instruments.

“It’s an alto sax,” says eight-grader Jordan Ramos. “It’s very new and it makes a very good sound.”

“I actually ended up getting the last flute,” says sixth-grader Jomar Hernandez.

The students say that they are grateful for the donation.

“It’s a privilege to have a band, because most schools don't have a band…I’m grateful to be in the band,” Hernandez says.

The Paterson School District received $83,000 from “Save the Music” and the “Sound Start Foundation.” The Academy of Fine and Performing Arts School received the bulk of it, while $22,000 went to another public school in the district.
