While the potential weekend storm is all the buzz on social media right now, the immediate weather impact for New Jersey will be the dropping temperatures tonight.
Frost advisories and freeze warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service. If you have any outdoor pets, they should be brought indoors or put in a safe warm place. Plants that are sensitive to cold should also be taken care of.
It's the first time since mid-April that the weather has been this cold.
Skies will be clear, and the wind will be on the lighter side.
These meteorological parameters generally lead to cooler overnight conditions. Now add a dry/cold Canadian air mass to the mix and the air will start to feel more like early November.
The model guidance continues to draw this potential weekend storm closer to the coast.
This helps and hurts New Jersey. Helps in the fact that the amount of rain that falls would be slightly less than forecasted. We need the rain, though.
No matter how we look at things the wind will be the biggest weather nemesis. Consistent winds from the same direction over days will put undue stress on trees and branches. This could topple trees, leading to outages and property damage.
The gustier winds are likely being felt at the immediate shoreline. 50 to 60 mph gusts could be possible. Also, with that consistent/persistent wind and wind direction, an awful lot of ocean water is being pushed ashore and into the back bays.
During times of high tide expect flooding. Coastal flood watches have been issued as well.
