A teenager riding an electric bicycle suffered serious injuries Monday night after failing to stop at a stop sign and crashing into a passing vehicle.

The Middlesex Borough Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 9:19 p.m. Monday.

According to investigators, the juvenile was operating the e-bike at a high speed when they went through a stop sign, colliding with a motor vehicle passing through the intersection.

Middlesex Borough officers and medical services arrived to treat the teen. Due to the severity of the injuries, the juvenile rider was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment. An update on their current condition has not been provided.

The crash comes amid a statewide surge in e-bike popularity — and a corresponding rise in traffic safety concerns. Middlesex Borough police are using the incident to urge all e-bike riders to wear helmets and necessary safety gear, obey all traffic laws, and remain aware of surrounding vehicles and pedestrians.

The incident also highlights a major shift in state regulations. New Jersey's new e-bike requirements were signed into law in January 2026 and are set to go into effect this July.
