Authorities say a taxi driver was shot and killed in Rahway, allegedly by the passenger he was driving.
Police arrived on Bedford Street just before 11 p.m. Tuesday and found 57-year-old Imad Alasmar, of Edison, dead inside his cab. Police say the passenger in the taxi pulled out a gun and tried to rob Alasmar, but instead shot him in the back of the head.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office says the taxi struck a parked car after the shooting, injuring a man and a woman. They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Station Cab assistant manager Jim Maye says this is the second time someone had tried to rob his employees in recent weeks.
"Last week we had a similar type of case where a driver was robbed at gunpoint about a block from here," he says.
Alasmar's family says he was a hard-working man just trying to make a living. He had 10 children.
"He took care of us, but he's gone now, so we have to just be there for each other," says his oldest daughter Mimi.
"I miss my dad already," says oldest son Imad Jr.
The suspect got away on foot without any money. Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.
