As Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida, some New Jerseyans are heading south to help.
Dorian strengthened to a Category 4 storm Friday evening, prompting FEMA to order New Jersey’s Task Force 1 into service.
In Wall Township, 80 emergency responders loaded up 18 trucks to start a convoy to head south to Miami. The volunteers specialize in Hazmat, fire, EMS and urban search and rescue work. They will be deployed in Florida for two weeks.
Among the members is Jennifer Michelson and her German shepherd partner Flint.
“We are trained specifically for urban search and rescue,” Michelson says. “It’s gone from collapsed buildings to wide area searches with all the hurricanes we’ve been having.”
Dorian has the potential for 130 mph winds and could make landfall near Florida by Tuesday. The responders say that they will be ready.
A loss of electricity is almost a certainty in hurricanes, which is why crews with PSE&G are also heading down to Florida. A group will head to Clearwater on Saturday, bringing with them utility and fuel trucks, along with specialized equipment like backyard diggers to help put in utility poles.
The 100 PSE&G members include 60 linemen. They will be assisting Duke Energy.
American Red Cross volunteers from New Jersey have already headed down to Florida to assist.
