Taking precaution: Security heightened at NJ mosques following New Zealand attack
Law enforcement officials across New Jersey have increased security at area mosques following a mass shooting attack at two mosques in New Zealand that left 49 people dead.
Friday is a day of prayer for those who practice the Muslim faith. New Jersey is home to more than 250,000 Muslims.
Ibrahim Alrady, a Muslim man living in Jersey City, tells News 12 New Jersey that he was saddened to hear the news of the attack when he woke up Friday morning.
“I checked my phone and I saw the tragedy. It is really sad,” he says. But Alrady says that he feels safe in Jersey City with the increased police presence.
“The police chief assigned police officers to every house of worship involving the Muslim faith today for their main prayers,” says Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea.
Shea says that the city has a plan of action whenever a group is targeted anywhere in the world so that people in Jersey City feel safe.
“The most important thing for them to do there from a police standpoint is making sure that the community feels safe,” says Jersey City Mayor Stephen Fulop.
Officials say that Jersey City police were briefed by the FBI early Friday morning, which they say is customary after a major incident. The FBI says that they believe there is no local danger.
