ATM penalty fees have hit their highest level in almost 20 years, according to a survey done by the website Bankrate.com.
The study found the average out-of-network fee rose to $4.42 per transaction in 2015. ATM surcharges also increased. The average in 2015 reached $2.88. In 1998, the fee was only $0.89.
The study also found the average overdraft fee in 2015 rose to $33.07.
Bankrate.com suggests downloading your bank's smartphone app, which should allow users to locate in-network ATMs or ATMs without fees. The site also suggests going to a convenience store that offers cash back on debit transactions.
