Some lingering effects are still being felt from Sunday’s storm along the Jersey Shore, including Manasquan, making for what may have been the lousiest weekend of the summer for beaches.
A combination of northeast winds, an offshore tropical storm, and a near shore rainmaker churned up the ocean enough to prompt coastal flood advisories for the next two days in many southern New Jersey counties.
MORE: News 12 New Jersey weather center Lifeguards had their hands full over the weekend, especially Saturday, making around a dozen rescues when swimmers became trapped in the rip currents. Since Tropical Storm Isaias, they’ve made about 200 rescues. Saturday onshore winds kept the surf high, as Sunday was a washout and kept people away.
“You can get in trouble in 10 seconds,” says Doug Anderson, chief lifeguard in Manasquan. “You can lose your feet, get sucked out real quick. We have a smart team, which is an afterhours rescue team, but that could take minutes to get people there."
Only minor flooding is expected at times of high tide through Tuesday. High tide is around 7 to 8 a.m. and p.m. today and tomorrow. Ocean waves are also expected to remain high.
