The Suffolk County sheriff announced the launch Wednesday of what he says is the first-of-its kind jail intelligence network.
Sheriff Errol Toulon tells News 12 that the Corrections Intelligence Center at the Yaphank Correctional Facility will help to keep Long Islanders by staying a step ahead of potential threats.
He says the officers at the network will work proactively to collect information about any contraband, drugs, gang affiliations and potential threats that happen at the facility.
"Some inmates are receiving Bibles, small Bibles with pages of fentanyl sprayed on to it, so that's something that's sometimes undetectable," Toulon says. "But, more importantly, we have officers that could be exposed to fentanyl while they're being searched and the fact that fentanyl is being introduced into these jails is problematic."
Toulon says the office then shares the information with other jails and prisons in the tri-state area.
Toulon says they want to see any trends that are occurring that officers could be on alert for.
He also says anyone trying to bring contraband inside a jail could also be selling it outside in Long Island communities. He says knowing who those people are and what they are doing can potentially help police identify them.
