It was an emotional return to school Thursday for students attending classes at the Newark school where three college students were killed.
Some students at Mount Vernon School say they plan to speak with grief counselors about the incident. Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Essex County authorities were at the school to hand out backpacks and other supplies to help put students? minds at ease.
The makeshift memorial where the students were killed was removed from the school?s basketball court Wednesday with the approval of their families. The school superintendent said it was important to remove the memorial to help students resume a normal way of life. Officials are working with various foundations to put up a permanent memorial.
