Street vendors in Newark voiced their concerns Monday about how the city is set to run them out of town.
In two weeks, Newark plans to downsize the number of vendors in the city to 22 and any that remain will see their license fees double to $1,000. Barry's Hot Dogs has been a staple on Market Street for three decades.
"Thirty years of hot dog vending got four kids through college," said Barry Shumate, owner of Barrry's Hot Dogs. He says he understands times are changing, but wishes there was a way for the vendors to change with the times.
All vendors must re-apply to operate within the special downtown district. The Vendors Council has asked city officials for more licenses to help those in jeopardy.
