A Tenafly native who was held hostage by Hamas for 584 days was honored in his hometown.

Edan Alexander was joined by Rep. Josh Gottheimer and local community and religious leaders to rename River Edge Road as Edan Alexander Way.

“I knew my family and my town and so many people were fighting for me, keeping my name alive and pushing for my return. That gave me strength,” Alexander said at the event. “To have a road named here, in the place I call home, is something I could never have imagined.”

Alexander returned to New Jersey in June after being held hostage for over a year. He was released on May 12.

Alexander was taken hostage in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack in Israel while serving with the Israeli army. He announced earlier this month that he would be returning to Israel and would be putting on an IDF uniform once again.
