It was the most adorable press conference ever when the Trenton Thunder introduced its newest member Dash, a 9-week-old puppy who will be the team’s newest bat dog.
Dash is the fourth generation of bat dog for the team. He is cousins with current bat dog Rookie. Dash replaces former bat dog Derby who died in January 2018. Derby was Rookie’s dad.
The team says that Rookie is excited to have Dash around at the Arm & Hammer Ballpark.
“I think he was excited. I’m sure in one way he was like, ‘OK, someone’s coming into my show,’ but I think he’s ready to share the spotlight,” says Thunder General Manager Jeff Hurley. “Unfortunately, when Derby passed, I think [Rookie] did miss him, so we’re excited to have a second companion for Rookie and maybe that will push him to get bats faster.”
Dash will spend this season learning and going to “bat-retrieval school.” He will make his game debut in 2021.
