Gov. Phil Murphy has signed legislation expanding the definition of terrorism under state law in response to last month's fatal attack on a kosher market in Jersey City.

The new law says terrorism now includes crimes aimed at inciting terror against people based on their religion, race or national origin, among other factors.

Murphy said the new law will make it clear that New Jersey is committed to the elimination of “hate in all its forms.”

The legislation passed unanimously about a month after the Dec. 10 attack that left three people dead inside the market. A Jersey City police detective was killed earlier that day after a shootout with the gunmen.

The attackers are also accused of killing a taxi driver a few days before the attack, as well as shooting out the back window of a Jewish man’s car in Hudson County.

Authorities have said the attackers expressed hatred of Jews and law enforcement.

The new law was signed on Wednesday.
