Officials say that five firefighters were hurt battling an early morning fire in Toms River.
The first started around 5 a.m. in a home on 15th Street in the Silverton section of town.
Fire officials tell News 12 New Jersey that firefighters believed people were inside the home when they arrived at the scene. One firefighter was burned while trying to get inside the home. Four others suffered heat exhaustion.
The Toms River fire chief says that extra firefighters were on duty Tuesday because it was New Year’s Day.
“Automatically we have an emergency response plan, which I doubled because it was New Year’s,” the chief said. “We had an overwhelming amount of people where, but it was needed and the fire got put out.”
Officials say that the family that owned the house had only recently had the home raised after it was flooded by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
