President Donald Trump says the remains of U.S. prisoners of war and those missing in action during the Korean War will be returned.
Trump said during a news conference Tuesday after a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore that he asked Kim to commit to returning the remains "and we got it."
"The remains will be coming back. They're going to start that process immediately,” the president said.
Korean War veterans from New Jersey say that they are pleased with the progress President Trump has made.
“There’s 7,700 MIAs. That’s a lot of bodies to bring back,” says George Bruzgis. “I hope they get them all back again.”
The remains of hundreds of soldiers have already been returned, but recovery operations ceased a decade ago when conditions became too dangerous for the recovery team.
“I think it would be a wonderful thing if they could at least give closure to the relatives,” says veteran Ed Frye.
But some of the veterans say that they are still skeptical of North Korea and the president’s summit.
“We got a lot of thin soup but no meat on the bone at this meeting, but we'll see what happens,’ says veteran Robert Domanoski.
Veteran Perry Georgison says he agrees.
"There's always a little bit of doubt in the back of my mind. I'd like to see it happen. I'd love to see it happen,” he says.
The veterans say that they hope the remains can be returned while the families of those MIA soldiers are still alive.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
