New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker used his time during questioning Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett Tuesday to also take jabs at President Donald Trump, and that's led to a back and forth between the two.
Newark, and Booker's leadership of it, is being directly called out by the president.
Booker referenced the president many times Tuesday, mentioning his stances on Roe V. Wade and the Affordable Care Act, and asking Barrett if she condemned white supremacy, which she said she did.
Sen. Booker is one of many to criticize the president's response to the same question during the first presidential debate.
The president responded to Booker at his rally that night in Pennsylvania and on Twitter, tweeting, “How dare failed Presidential Candidate (1% and falling!) @CoryBooker make false charges and statements about me in addressing Judge Barrett. Illegally, never even lived in Newark when he was Mayor. Guy is a total loser! I want better Healthcare for far less money, always protecting people with Pre-existing conditions. He has done nothing on Healthcare, cost or otherwise, or virtually anything else. An empty suit!!!
President Trump stayed on the attack, bringing up Booker again at a rally Wednesday in Iowa.
“We're not going to destroy the American dream for stupid people like Cory Booker,” says President Trump. “He was putting Cory Booker in charge. He did a great job as mayor of Newark, New Jersey.  How's Newark doing?"
Booker reacting to the jab on Twitter late Wednesday night, saying "Stop attacking Newark and do your damn job, @realDonaldTrump."
It’s not the first time the two have gone at it. The two butted heads in 2018 after Booker released unapproved documents during hearings on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
