A state-of-the-art birthing center is soon to be open at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.
The Mary V. O’Shea Birth Center offers two birthing suites – each with a spa-sized tub, lounge area, living room, kitchen and dining area. There is also a serenity garden.
“We’re trying to create an environment that’s home-like, comfortable, soothing,” says clinical director Joanne Cunha.
Women with low-risk pregnancies will get their own birthing team.
“A midwife, an RN and a tech that’s also doula-trained, which is a labor support person,” Cunha says.
Cunha says that there is also access to the same medical equipment that any hospital has in case any birthing complications arise.
"We will have very quick access to all the technology of the hospital system,” she says.
The birthing center will open in mid-October. More information about the birth center can be found on the hospital’s website.
